Key takeaways
- Size the machine to your busiest hour, not your daily total. A one-group machine suits a kiosk or bakery counter; most cafés serving milk drinks all day start at two groups.
- Indian distributor and marketplace listings for two-group semi-automatics start at about ₹2 lakh (Budan, Expobar, Nuova Simonelli). La Marzocco's Linea PB is listed at ₹15 lakh. Ask every seller whether the price includes GST.
- Budget for the grinder at the same time. Espresso grinders on one Indian distributor's site run from about ₹54,000 to ₹5.4 lakh, and a weak grinder limits a good machine.
- Fit water filtration from day one. La Marzocco says using the right water is needed to keep its warranty, and hard water leaves scale in boilers and pipes.
Most Indian cafés need a two-group semi-automatic espresso machine. Indian sellers list two-group models from about ₹2 lakh (Kaapi Machines, IndiaMART); La Marzocco's Linea PB is listed at ₹15 lakh (Kaapi Machines). Budget separately for a grinder and water filter, and buy from a seller who services your city.
Disclosure: Restronaut has no commercial relationship with any brand or seller named here and is paid nothing for mentioning them. We have not tested these machines. Prices are what each seller's page listed on 25 October 2026, and they change.
How many groups do I need?
Count your busiest hour, not your daily total. A group is one brewing head. Each one makes one or two shots at a time, so the number of groups sets how many drinks you can start at once when the queue builds.
Indian distributor Kaapi Machines publishes an "average daily production" for each machine it sells, which gives a rough scale:
| Machine | Groups | Daily output the seller states | Listed price (25 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| La Carimali Bubble 1 Group | 1 | Up to 100 cups | ₹2,42,529 (Kaapi Machines) |
| Budan Maestro | Not stated; sold for "small coffee businesses" | Up to 120 cups | ₹1,89,999 (Kaapi Machines) |
| La Carimali Bubble | 2 | Up to 300 cups | ₹2,90,669 (Kaapi Machines) |
| Rancilio Classe 5 USB | Group count of the listed price not stated; spec table shows an 11-litre boiler | Up to 300 cups | ₹4,43,529 (Kaapi Machines) |
| La Marzocco Linea PB | Group count of the listed price not stated | Up to 600 cups | ₹15,00,000 (Kaapi Machines) |
These are the seller's own figures and assume a trained barista. Treat them as a ceiling. A rough way to use them:
- One group: a bakery counter, kiosk or restaurant where coffee is an add-on, and where you rarely have more than a few drinks waiting.
- Two groups: the default for a café. Two baristas can work at once, or one barista can pull two orders while steaming milk.
- Three groups: busy high-street or office-district cafés with a sharp morning rush and two or more people on the bar.
If you are torn between two sizes, a second group is cheaper than a lost queue. A machine that is too small slows every drink at peak, and you cannot add a group later.
Semi-automatic or super-automatic?
A semi-automatic machine needs a barista to grind, dose, tamp and steam milk; the machine controls water temperature, pressure and shot volume. A super-automatic (often called fully automatic or bean-to-cup) grinds, brews and froths milk at the press of a button.
Choose a semi-automatic if coffee is what you sell. It gives a skilled barista control over every shot and every milk drink, and it is what specialty cafés use. Choose a super-automatic if coffee is a side line, staff turn over often, or guests serve themselves — a hotel breakfast buffet, a bakery counter, an office.
Prices range widely. Kaapi Machines lists the La Cimbali S15, rated up to 150 cups a day, at ₹9,43,999, and the S20, rated up to 200 cups, at ₹13,74,999 (Kaapi Machines). At the lower end it lists the Budan M200, which it describes as built for cafés and self-serve spots doing up to 150 cups a day, at ₹1,91,493 (Kaapi Machines). The S15's page says it offers up to 96 drink options (Kaapi Machines); the trade-off is that consistency comes from the machine, not from a barista's judgement.
Which specifications matter?
Five specs decide whether a machine can keep up and whether your site can run it.
Boiler type. A heat-exchanger (HX) machine has one boiler for steam, with brew water passing through it; the Rancilio Classe 5 USB and the Carimali Bubble use this design (Kaapi Machines, Kaapi Machines). A dual-boiler or multi-boiler machine has a separate boiler for brew water, which holds espresso temperature more steadily when you are steaming milk non-stop. The La Marzocco Linea PB and the Budan Maestro 2 Group are sold with dual or multiple boilers (Kaapi Machines, Kaapi Machines). HX is cheaper and simpler; dual boilers cost more and suit cafés that care about shot-to-shot consistency.
Steam power. In a café most drinks contain milk, so steam often runs out before espresso does. A bigger steam boiler and higher wattage recover faster between jugs. Compare the steam boiler size and total wattage on the spec sheet: the Carimali Bubble 2 Group lists an 11-litre steam boiler at 3,850 W, while the Bubble 1 Group lists 4 litres at 1,850 W (Kaapi Machines, Kaapi Machines).
Power supply and phase. Two-group machines draw several kilowatts. The Rancilio Classe 5 USB lists 4,300 W of boiler power and both 220–240 V and 380–415 V supplies; the Linea PB lists single- and three-phase options at 4,600 W (Kaapi Machines, Kaapi Machines). Ask your electrician whether your site has three-phase supply and enough sanctioned load before you order, and order the machine wired for what you have.
Water supply and drain. Commercial machines are plumbed in. The Carimali pages list a mains water connection (Kaapi Machines). Plan an inlet, a drain under the bar and space for a filter before the bar is built.
Volumetric controls. "Volumetric" or programmable buttons stop the shot at a set volume, so a new barista pulls the same shot as an experienced one. Check the spec sheet, especially on a used machine.
Which brands can I buy in India, and at what price?
We list brands where we could find an Indian seller publishing a price. Kaapi Machines sells La Marzocco, Rancilio, La Cimbali, Carimali and Budan machines and publishes prices for many models. La Marzocco named Kaapi Machines its Indian partner in 2020, citing its national service capability (La Marzocco). Kaapi calls itself "a preferred Indian partner" of La Cimbali (Kaapi Machines).
For Nuova Simonelli and Expobar we found prices only on IndiaMART, a marketplace where independent dealers post listings. We could not confirm from those listings which dealers are authorised by the manufacturer. Ask any dealer for proof of authorisation and for who will honour the warranty.
We found no Indian seller page publishing a price for Victoria Arduino, Sanremo or Gaggia commercial machines, so they are not in the table. That does not mean they are unavailable; ask their dealers directly.
| Tier | Example machine | Groups | Listed price (25 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Budan Maestro 2 Group | 2 | ₹2,12,399 (Kaapi Machines) |
| Entry | Expobar Megacrem 2 Group | 2 | ₹2,05,910 to ₹3,02,300 (the higher listing says it includes GST) across IndiaMART dealers (IndiaMART) |
| Entry | Nuova Simonelli Appia Life 2 Group | 2 | ₹2,10,000 to ₹3,28,000 across IndiaMART dealers; ₹4,50,000 for a volumetric listing (IndiaMART) |
| Entry | La Carimali Bubble | 2 | ₹2,90,669 (Kaapi Machines) |
| Mid | La Carimali Glow | Not stated on listing | ₹3,49,999 (Kaapi Machines) |
| Mid | Rancilio Classe 5 USB | Not stated on listing | ₹4,43,529 (Kaapi Machines) |
| High | La Marzocco Linea PB | Not stated on listing | ₹15,00,000 (Kaapi Machines) |
| High | La Marzocco Linea PB-X | Not stated on listing | ₹17,85,000 (Kaapi Machines) |
| High | La Marzocco Leva X | Not stated on listing | ₹27,65,000 (Kaapi Machines) |
Three cautions on these numbers. First, Kaapi's pages do not say whether prices include GST, so ask. Second, where a listing does not state the group count, confirm it in the written quote; a one-group and a two-group of the same model can differ a lot. Third, IndiaMART prices vary widely between dealers for the same model, which is a reason to get at least three quotes and to compare what each includes — installation, training, a first water filter, the warranty.
How much should I spend on the grinder?
More than most first-time owners plan for. The grinder decides how evenly coffee extracts, and an uneven grind gives a sour or bitter shot no machine can fix. A busy café also asks a grinder to run hundreds of times a day.
Kaapi Machines lists espresso grinders from ₹53,569 for the Hey Café Buddy Doser and ₹94,999 for the Hey Café HC-600, through ₹1,69,999 for the Anfim Luna and ₹3,29,999 for the Mahlkönig E65S, to ₹4,49,999 for the Mahlkönig E80S and ₹5,39,999 for the E80S GBW (Kaapi Machines).
Two specs help you match a grinder to your volume. One is the daily output the seller states: the E65S is rated up to 5 kg of coffee a day and its burrs at about 800 kg of grinding before replacement (Kaapi Machines). The other is whether it grinds on demand (fresh for each shot) or into a doser (ground ahead and stored), which matters for freshness. Many cafés run two grinders, one for the house blend and one for decaf or a single origin.
Do I need water filtration?
Yes. Hard water leaves scale inside boilers and pipes. La Marzocco recommends filtered water in all its machines and says using the right water is needed to keep the warranty (La Marzocco Home). Other makers' warranties often have similar terms, so read the clause on water before you buy.
Get your water tested first. Groundwater and municipal supply differ sharply between Indian cities and even between buildings, and the right filter depends on hardness and chlorine. Kaapi Machines sells BWT filters but does not list prices on its site (Kaapi Machines), so ask for the filter, its cartridge life at your water hardness, and the replacement cartridge price in the same quote as the machine. Cartridges are a running cost, not a one-off.
What about service and spares?
Service matters more in India than the brand name. A machine that is down on a Saturday morning costs you the day's coffee sales. Before you buy, ask the seller four things in writing:
- Who services my city, and how fast? Kaapi Machines lists separate service teams for west, north and east, and south India, with the states each covers (Kaapi Machines). Ask any seller for the same, plus a named technician and a response time.
- How long is the warranty, and what voids it? Water damage and skipped servicing are common exclusions.
- What does an annual maintenance contract cost? Kaapi describes AMCs with visits every 15, 30 or 60 days, and preventive maintenance contracts that cover repairs during the contract (Kaapi Machines). It does not publish their prices, so get one in writing.
- Are spares stocked in India? Gaskets, shower screens and steam-wand tips wear out on a schedule. Ask which parts are held locally and how long anything else takes to arrive.
Train staff on the daily routine too. Backflushing groups, purging steam wands and changing gaskets on time prevent most service calls.
Should I buy, lease or rent?
Buy if you have the cash and expect to stay at the site for years; the machine is a long-life asset. Some suppliers rent machines monthly or place a machine with a café that buys their coffee beans. These deals reduce your upfront spend but tie you to a supplier, and the total paid over a few years can exceed the purchase price.
We did not find a published monthly rental rate on the Indian supplier pages we read, so compare any offer on three numbers: the total you will pay over three years, what happens at the end (do you own the machine, return it, or renew), and whether service and repairs are included. If a deal requires you to buy beans from the supplier, check the bean price against the market before you sign.
A used machine from a closing café can be good value, but only if a technician inspects it and you can buy a service contract for it. Without service, a cheap used machine is a risk.
Worked example: a 60-cover café doing 150 cups a day
These numbers are illustrative, chosen to show how the budget adds up. They are not quotes.
Suppose a café seats 60 and expects about 150 coffees a day, with a morning rush in which perhaps 40 of those drinks are ordered in one hour, and most drinks contain milk.
- Groups: 40 drinks in an hour is one every 90 seconds, mostly with steamed milk. One group would leave a queue, so the café needs two groups and a strong steam boiler.
- Machine: an entry or mid-tier two-group semi-automatic, say ₹2.5 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh.
- Grinder: one on-demand espresso grinder rated for the volume, say ₹1 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh. A second grinder for decaf can wait.
- Water filter and installation: say ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 for the filter, plumbing and electrical work, depending on the site.
- Small equipment: knock box, tampers, jugs, scales and cleaning chemicals, say ₹20,000 to ₹40,000.
- First-year service: an AMC or preventive maintenance contract, say ₹25,000 to ₹50,000.
On those assumptions the coffee bar costs roughly ₹4.25 lakh at the low end and ₹9.95 lakh at the high end. The biggest swing is the machine and grinder. Spending less on the machine to afford a better grinder is usually the better trade for a café of this size.
Buying checklist
- Estimate your busiest hour's drinks, not the daily total, and size the groups to it.
- Decide semi-automatic or super-automatic based on who will make the coffee.
- Check boiler type and steam boiler size against how many milk drinks you sell.
- Confirm your site's power supply and sanctioned load with an electrician before ordering.
- Plan the water inlet, drain and filter before the bar is built, and test your water.
- Budget for the grinder at the same time as the machine.
- Get three written quotes that state groups, GST, installation, training, warranty and filter.
- Ask each dealer for proof of authorisation from the manufacturer.
- Get the AMC price, response time and local spares list in writing.
- For rental or bean-supply deals, compare the three-year total against buying.
