Key takeaways
- The SCA Barista Skills certificate is the one the SCA calls globally recognised. In India it is taught in Bengaluru by Araku's academy, the Specialty Coffee Academy of India and Something's Brewing, each with fees on their own course pages.
- Check whether the SCA exam and certificate are inside the fee. The Specialty Coffee Academy of India sells the same course with and without certification, so compare like with like.
- For a first café job, a one-day practical course is often enough. The SCA Foundation level adds a certificate you can show; Intermediate and Professional matter more once you train others or run a bar.
- The Coffee Board's five-day Kaapi Shastra in Bengaluru is built for owners, roasters and caterers, not baristas alone, and gives a certificate of participation rather than a skills certificate.
- A certificate tells an employer you sat a course and passed a test. It does not replace a trial shift, and no provider here publishes job-placement figures.
The most widely recognised barista certificate in India is the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Barista Skills certificate. Bengaluru has the most SCA options: Araku's academy, the Specialty Coffee Academy of India and Something's Brewing. For a quick start, one-day practical courses run in four metros. The Coffee Board's Kaapi Shastra suits café owners and roasters.
Disclosure: Restronaut has no commercial relationship with any provider named here and is paid nothing for listing them. We have not attended these courses. No provider saw this piece before it was published.
How does the SCA certificate work?
The SCA runs the Coffee Skills courses. You start with Introduction to Coffee, then pick from five specialist areas: Barista Skills, Brewing, Green Coffee, Roasting and Sensory. Each area has three levels. On the SCA's own course page, Foundation is listed at 7 hours, Intermediate at 14 hours and Professional at 21 hours (Specialty Coffee Association).
Courses are taught by Authorised SCA Trainers. To earn a certificate you pass assessments, practical and written. Passing each course also counts toward an SCA diploma. The SCA now describes four diplomas (Café, Roastery, Coffee Trade and Sustainable Coffee) and calls them "cumulative": you build one by combining certificates across disciplines and levels (SCA Diplomas). The Café Diploma is the one for baristas and café managers.
Points are how progress is counted. Araku's academy, which teaches the SCA programme in Bengaluru, lists Foundation at 5 points, Intermediate at 10 and Professional at 25, with 100 points needed for the diploma (ARAKU Coffee). The SCA's public pages no longer print the points table, so check your pathway in the SCA learner account before you plan around a number.
The SCA also says the price of each course depends on your region, so Indian fees differ from those abroad (SCA Diplomas).
The courses compared
The table uses only what each provider publishes on its own course page. Fees are rounded only where the page rounds them. "Fee on request" means we could not find a published fee.

What each provider offers
Araku World Specialty Coffee Academy (Bengaluru). Araku's academy sits in its Indiranagar flagship. Its courses are run by Sumanth Paranjape, whom the course page names as an Authorised SCA Trainer. It teaches all three Barista Skills levels and lists a November run of each, back to back (ARAKU Coffee). In 2019 the SCA announced Araku's Hyderabad campus as India's first SCA Premier Training Campus (Specialty Coffee Association). We could not confirm on the SCA's public pages whether that status now covers the Bengaluru academy. Araku's page does not say whether the SCA exam fee sits inside the course fee, so ask.
Specialty Coffee Academy of India, SCAI (Bengaluru). SCAI is the clearest on what you pay for. Its SCA courses come in two versions: with SCA certification, where the fee covers learning material, the SCA exam and the certificate, or without it (SCAI). The practical exam is held at the academy; the written exam is online, with up to 20 days to finish it. After two failed attempts you can pay to re-sit or take a completion certificate instead. The last Barista Skills batches on its pages ran in July 2026, so check for new dates.
Something's Brewing (Bengaluru, Surat, and short courses in four metros). Its SCA Foundation course is led by Sahil Thakkar, named on the page as an SCA Authorized Trainer, and the SCA certificate is awarded only after the exam (Something's Brewing). Its one-day courses run on Thursdays in Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. The page itself says the one-day course is foundational and should not be treated as a professional certification. Bookings cannot be cancelled once placed.
Kaapi Machines (five cities). Kaapi Machines sells coffee equipment and runs barista training centres. Its own course guide says its fees cover training, materials and an in-house certificate, and that SCA exam fees are paid to the SCA separately (Kaapi Machines). The guide gives approximate ranges rather than fixed prices, so get a written quote that says whether an SCA exam is included.
Coffee Board of India (Bengaluru). The Board's Kaapi Shastra programme is a five-day, offline course on roasting, brewing, blending, grinding, packaging and retail, aimed at roasters, hoteliers, restaurants, institutional caterers and entrepreneurs (Coffee Board). The next batch is listed for 30 November to 4 December 2026. Registration is through the India Coffee app, and SC/ST participants get a 50% concession (Coffee Board). Espresso is one part of day three, so this is a business and bean-to-cup course, not barista training.
The Board's post-graduate diploma in coffee quality management is a long course for future cuppers and quality managers. The 2026–27 batch has already been selected, so the next chance is the following intake (Coffee Board).
Brand academies we looked for. We searched for open barista courses from Blue Tokai, Third Wave Coffee, Lavazza and Starbucks in India. Blue Tokai has run paid espresso and latte art workshops at its cafés, but we found no current booking page. Lavazza has announced training centres in Chennai and Mumbai in the press, and we found no public course page with dates or fees. We found no open course pages from Third Wave Coffee or Starbucks. If that changes, we will add them.
Which one should you pick?
Your first café job. Start cheap and practical. A one-day course teaches you to dial in a grinder, pull a shot and steam milk, which is what a trial shift tests. Add SCA Barista Skills Foundation if you want a certificate on your CV or plan to work abroad, where it is better known.
A café owner training staff. Don't send every new hire to an SCA course. Send one senior person through Foundation and Intermediate so they can set your recipes and train the rest in-house. If you run outlets in several cities, a provider with centres in each city saves travel. If you are opening a café, Kaapi Shastra covers sourcing, roasting and retail in five days.
A career barista. Follow the SCA levels in order: Foundation, Intermediate, then Professional, which needs Intermediate first. Professional and the Café Diploma signal that you can lead a bar, run quality checks and train others. Add Brewing and Sensory courses if you want to move toward a head-barista or trainer role.
A home enthusiast. A short latte art or brewing workshop is enough. You do not need an exam to make better coffee at home.
What a certificate does and doesn't do for hiring
A certificate shows that you sat a structured course and passed a set test. The SCA calls its certificate globally recognised, which helps when an employer has never heard of your trainer (SCA Diplomas).
It doesn't prove you can hold quality during a rush. Most cafés will still ask for a trial shift, and some will retrain you on their own recipes either way. None of the providers listed publishes placement rates or salary outcomes, so treat any promise of a job with care. If a course offers placement help, ask for names of cafés that have hired its students and call one.
Ask every provider four questions before you pay: is the SCA exam and certificate fee included, is the trainer an Authorised SCA Trainer, how many students share one machine, and what happens if you fail the exam.
How we chose
We included a course only if we could open its provider's own page and confirm who runs it, what it covers and which certificate it leads to. We ranked nothing on reputation. The table is grouped by provider and level, not ordered by merit. For each course we checked:
- Provider and, for SCA courses, whether the page names an Authorised SCA Trainer
- Curriculum as described on the course page
- Certification body: SCA, Coffee Board or the provider itself
- Published fee, taken from the provider's page, and whether exam fees are included
- Duration and location, as published
We left out listing sites, resellers and courses with no page we could open. Fees and dates change between batches. Confirm both with the provider before you pay.

How we made this
We read the Specialty Coffee Association's education pages, the Coffee Board's programme notices and each training provider's own course pages, and took every fee from those pages, not from listing sites. We have not attended any of these courses. AI tools helped gather and draft; the editor checks every figure against its source before publishing. Our editorial standards
